Dannevirke swimming pool.

Bathers at the public swimming pool, funded in April 1911 by government and public subscription. The photo must have been taken on a Wednesday afternoon, or after 1917 as that is when the council finally allowed mixed bathing, but the only spectators allowed were parents, guardians or bathers relatives. Bathing costumes were to consist of neck to knee costumes and trunks.

The swimming pool was the site of a double drowning in 1925 when a disabled veteran attempted to save a young boy who was drowning. The original pool at the end of York Street has since been replaced by the heated indoor AMP Wai Splash facility.

The  only photo in the series "Buildings Municipal".
